FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas – Oklahoma State outdoor track & field kicked off competition at the NCAA West Prelims on Wednesday with several Cowboys in action across four events.
The Cowboys opened action in the 1,500 Meter First Round with Fouad Messaoudi, Ryan Schoppe, Kian Davis and Isaiah Priddey each competing to reach the Quarterfinals.
Schoppe led his heat from wire-to-wire with the fastest time in any of the four heats with a time of 3: 40.27. 1,500 Meter Big 12 Champion Messaoudi and Davis each qualified through via the next four best times with times of 3: 43.85 and 3: 42.56, respectively.
The trio move onto Friday’s Quarterfinals, where the top 5 in each heat plus the next two best times will qualify straight through to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. Schoppe and Messaoudi will compete in the first of two heats with Davis running in the second heat.
Alex Maier rounded out the night for the Cowboys in style, finishing fifth overall in the 10,000 Meters, advancing him straight to the NCAA Championship Final in the event with a time of 28: 47.08. Maier held back in the early portion of the race before moving to the front and sticking with the lead pack of 12 all the way through the finish line, crossing the line just over a second behind the leader.
The Cowgirls begin their weekend Thursday with six events, with three First Round events and three semifinals. Bailey Golden kicks things off in the Long Jump after qualifying for nationals in the Heptathlon last week at the Big 12 Championships. Following Golden is Ariadni Adamopoulou in the Pole Vault, where she qualified for indoor nationals earlier this season and finished as a second-team All-American in the event.
In the first of three First-Round events for the Cowgirls, Sivan Auerbach and Heidi Demeo open in the 1,500 Meters, with Auerbach in the first heat and Demeo finishing it off in the fourth heat. Both Cowgirls finished with All-Big 12 honors earlier this month in the event at the Big 12 Championships.
Following the 1,500, Tamara Woodley and Christina Ollison compete in the 400 Meter Dash in the first and second heats, respectively, with the top three finishers in each heat plus the next six best times advancing to the Quarterfinals on Saturday.
Big 12 runner-up Gabija Galvydyte and Maddie Salek wrap up the First-Round events in the 800 Meters in the first of four heats overall. The same advancement procedures as the 400 apply in the 800 with 24 runners overall advancing to Saturday’s Quarterfinals.
In the final event of the night, Gabby Hentemann and Clarissa Morales compete in the 10,000 Meters with the top 12 finishers advancing straight to the NCAA Championship Final. Hentemann enters the West Prelims hot off her 10,000 Meter title at the Big 12 Championships and will be looking to advance to her second straight NCAA Championships.
The entirety of the NCAA West Preliminary Round will be streamed on the SEC Network + at the start of the running events each day.
