Crawley Reaches NCAA Singles Quarters

CHAMPAIGN, Illinois Fiona Crawley continued her winning ways on Wednesday during day three of the 2022 Division I NCAA Women’s Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships from the Kahn Outdoor Tennis Complex on the University of Illinois campus.

No. 55 Crawley, who has yet to drop a set in three singles matches this week, made No. 49 Kylie Collins of Texas her latest victim, 6-3, 7-6 (5). The San Antonio, Texas, sophomore is now up to 46 wins this season, a figure that leads the nation and also ranks as the fourth most in Carolina program history.

No. 51 Carson Tanguilig had her freshman singles campaign come to an end at the hands of No. 36 Michaela Bayerlova, a fifth-year senior from Washington State that was named Pac 12 Player of the Year and has only lost two singles matches all year. A back-and-forth affair saw the Tar Heel rookie capture the first set 7-5, but could not close it out in dropping the final two sets, 7-6 and 7-5.

No. 30 Elizabeth Scotty suffered a similar fait against No. 2 seed Peyton Stearns of Texas. Stearns grabbed the opening set, 6-3, but Scotty answered back with a 6-4 second set win, however, the Longhorn sophomore proved to be too much in the end in winning the third set, 6-2.

With all the singles success this week, the Tar Heels doubles teams were forced to play the late doubles matches for the second night in a row.

No. 39 Cameron Morra and Tanguilig dropped a tight first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6, and lost the second set, 6-1, to No. 12 Ayumi Miyamoto and Lisa Marie Rioux of Oklahoma State.

No. 2 Crawley and Scotty also lost in straight sets to ACC foe No. 13 Daevenia Achong and Eden Richardson from Miami, 6-4, 6-1.

Morra’s UNC career comes to a close as a five-time ITA All-America, won 87 career singles matches and is just one of 11 players in program history to win 100 doubles matches.

Crawley will take on Pepperdine’s No. 27 Lisa Zaar in a quarterfinal match on Thursday.
