TROY, NY – Sophomore Aiden Drover-Mattinen won the Singles A Flight and senior Abraham Yohannes captured the B Flight and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men’s tennis team had three doubles finalists in the Siena College Invitational, which was held on RPI’s Sharp Courts.
Drover-Mattinen, the reigning Liberty League Player of the Year, won in straight sets in both the semifinals and final, defeating Dylan Friedman of Marist College 6-2, 6-3 and Dante Russo of Siena 7-5, 6-3. It was the second straight year that Drover-Mattinen played in the A Flight final at Siena’s event.
In the B Flight, Yohannes also returned to the final, this year by defeating Danila Ischanka of Long Island University 6-1, 4-6, 10-6 in the semifinals. He then downed Declan O’Flynn of Holy Cross in the final, 6-4, 7-5.
Rensselaer had three doubles finalists, including sophomores Max Safanov and freshman Andy Zhu in the A Flight. They lost to a pair from Siena, 6-4. The B Flight featured the tandems of Yohannes and Sid Srinivasan against Bryce Burnham and Jonathan McMillanbut that match was not played.
