Oregon Ducks fall to Stanford Cardinal in NCAA women’s golf title match

Oregon set a program record with five tournament wins this season, including its first Pac-12 women’s golf championship.

But the second-ranked Ducks were unable to secure the biggest prize of all on Wednesday, losing to No. 1 Stanford in the final round of match play at the NCAA women’s golf championship tournament.

Heather Lin and Briana Chacon won their rounds for Oregon but the Ducks lost 3-2 to the Cardinal in the first final between the two top-ranked teams since the NCAA adopted the match-play format in 2015.

It was Oregon’s first time advancing past the quarterfinals.

The match was tied 2-2 when 2022 individual champion Rose Zhang closed out the team title for Stanford on the 17th hole with a short putt to defeat Oregon’s Sofie Kibsgaard Nielsen 3 and 1, ending what had been late charge back into contention for the Ducks .

“It’s hard,” Oregon coach Derek Radley told the Golf Channel after an emotional huddle with his team. “I’m so proud of my Ducks. We gave it every last effort until the very end. ”
