Packers best rookie sleeper to make an impact for 2022 NFL season

The Green Bay Packers had a great draft, putting them back in contention at the top of the NFC. Aaron Rodgers’ return gives them a huge boost, helping offset the loss of Davante Adams — especially considering Green Bay used the picks acquired in that trade to fill multiple holes across the roster.

The Packers selected two defensive players in the first round, bolstering their defense. The next four picks came on the other side of the ball. Rodgers is the back-to-back MVP in the league and will be looking to make it to the second Super Bowl of his career.

Green Bay’s defense is primed to be one of the best in the league, which will help Rodgers and the offense play well.

With that said, here is the Packers ’sleeper rookie to make an impact for the 2022 NFL season.

Packers Rookie Sleeper for 2022 NFL Season

Wide receiver Romeo Doubs

While second-rounder Christian Watson will likely be Green Bay’s top rookie receiver, don’t overlook fellow rookie Romeo Doubs, an early fourth-round pick. Doubs was a great wideout at Nevada due to his size and speed. Last season, he finished with 80 receptions for 1,109 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Doubs has great acceleration, which allows him to get a quick edge on cornerbacks. He can also make catches in traffic, hopefully allowing him to pick up some slack in the red zone left by Adams’ absence.

Rodgers and the Packers will be spreading the ball around on offense without the five-time Pro-Bowler. This will give a ton of opportunity to players like Doubs, as Green Bay will need multiple pass-catchers to step up. The running attack will remain elite with Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon. Head coach Matt LaFleur’s offense will likely play more off the run this season until the passing offense gets clicking.

If Doubs wants to become one of Rodgers’ top weapons, he will need to work on his running route. What made Adams such an elite player was his ability to separate from the defense with his remarkable agility and knack for fooling defenders. If Doubs can become an above-average route runner, his production should be above what is projected.

While Rodgers doesn’t have a clear-cut number one receiver, he has guys he trusts in Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb. Free-agent signing Sammy Watkins and second-round draft pick Watson will also be in competition for targets from the future Hall-of-Fame quarterback. Doubs could also work on being better after the catch, which would give him the ability to turn short catches into chunk plays.

Another way Doubs can impact the Packers is through his experience on special teams. Doubs has been a punt returner and could also contribute as a gunner. Last season, one of the downfalls of the Packers was their atrocious special teams unit. Green Bay has been adamant about addressing that disaster, as they brought in Rich Bisaccia to be the special teams coordinator. Bisaccia was the interim head coach for the Las Vegas Raiders last season, taking them to the playoffs.

This is a major upgrade for the Packers, and Bisaccia could get Doubs to have a significant impact on that aspect of the game. Having Doubs as a productive returner and receiver would make this fourth-round pick a steal.

While it may take some time for Doubs to get volume in the passing offense, he should have a productive rookie campaign. The Packers should be a contender once again, and players like Doubs could have a significant impact.

Colts, Darius Leonard
