Tinder of travel: This app connects travelers worldwide

You still swipe left and right, but not for the reasons you think…

Are you going somewhere you’ve never been before and want to get the inside scoop from a fellow traveler?

A new app provides travelers from around the world with a platform to connect with each other to swap tips, photos, and stories, as well as to arrange meet-ups.

Launched in early September, OffTheGrid connects like-minded folks who have a penchant for wanderlust from countries across the globe. Many travelers who want to venture off the beaten path will be able to find ways to avoid tourist traps, while other people will receive tips to make their journey safe. Furthermore, they can connect with other individuals who may want to visit the same place if they plan on going solo to a destination they feel uneasy about.

What separates the new tool from other travel apps is its Tinder-esque feel. You swipe right on someone’s photo if you like it, while a left swipe means you don’t. Users can also favorite photos they really like.

Unlike Tinder, however, “voting does not result in matches, romantic or otherwise. Instead, each swipe gets you an in-app coin,” explains Frommers.

The app allows users to upload their travel photos and videos to their timelines, as well as view the updates on other people’s profiles. Also, the coins allow users to unlock new locations as they browse through the Discover section. They also provide more information about the location including nearby attractions, maps, and more.

Under the trips tab, users can arrange in-person meetups. But the company takes safety seriously. According to TechCrunch, people must verify their email, phone number and Facebook account in order to use the app and connect with people.

The app also has an Explore tab for finding trending content or a specific location such as “Wildlife,” “Museums/Galleries” or “Food,” says TechCrunch.

Another reason people may be inclined to use the app is to keep track of their own trips. Jetsetters will have a designated spot to share all of their travel highlights, organized with photos and accompanying descriptions.
